The Union Area School District, on August 14, 1989, adopted a resolution establishing a Student Assistance Program(SAP). The SAP is dedicated to the proposition that each person affected by the school district should have the opportunity to realize his or her fullest potential. The nucleus of the SAP is the Core Team (CT), a group of trained professional staff members. The primary purpose of the CT is to insure that each student is free from the debilitating effects of drugs, alcohol, or other dysfunctional behaviors that interfere with positive social, emotional, physical, and/or academic growth. The functions of the (CT) may include identification, intervention, referral, and follow-up activities regarding students who may be experiencing difficulties, as well as promoting educational programs concerning "at-risk" students. With the cooperation of school, family, and community resources, the conditions for the optimum development of each student's potential will be realized.

Regularly scheduled meetings for the (CT) will be held throughout the school year for planning activities and updating objectives and procedures. The care of students who may be in need of the Student Assistance Program will take place as they are referred to the (CT). In-service for the staff, seminars for the students, as well as programs directed at the school community, will be conducted. A full review of the Union Area School District SAP policy is available upon request, or may be reviewed and/or discussed with any member of the (CT) or at any of the administrative offices.
